Famous/Successful Deaf People

These are just some Deaf/Hard of Hearing people that are either famous or successful in their own right. We want you to know that your child is not limited to what they can simply because they have a disabilities. Anything is possible for them if they have a great foundation and a family that believes in them.

Marlee Matlin: She is an American actress. She is the first Deaf individual to win an Oscar. She is groundbreaking and has paved the way for many Deaf/deaf/HH people.

Thomas Edison: He was a renowned  American inventor. He has developed many devices, including the invention of the lightbulb. 

Nyle DiMacro: He is an American model, actor, and Deaf Activist. He has won both America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars.

Claudia L. Gordon: She is the first Deaf Black female attorney in the US. She was also a prominent advisor on disability matters during former President Barack Obama’s administration.

Laura Bridgman: She was the first deaf-blind person to get an education and learn how to read and write. She did this before Helen Keller and she was Anne Sullivan’s friend. 

Tamika Catchings: She is a retired WNBA player for the Indiana Fever. Also, a 4-time gold medalist Olympic basketball player.

I. King Jordan: He is an American educator who became the first Deaf President of Gallaudet University.

Helen Keller: The most well known deaf-blind person. She has overcome many obstacles and accomplished many things, like flying a plane and writing a book.

Derrick Coleman: He is the first Deaf player to play in the NFL. He signed his contract in 2010 with the Seattle Seahawks.

Linda Bove: She is a Deaf actress that is most notable for her role as Linda the Librarian from the TV show Sesame Street. 

Millie Bobby Brown: She is an British actress, producer, writer, entrepreneur, and model. He is best known for her role as Eleven on the TV show Stranger Things.

Haben Girma: She is a disability rights advocate. Also, the first deaf-blind to graduate from Harvard Law School.

Lou Ferrigno: He is an actor and retired professional bodybuilder. He is best known for playing The Hulk in the late 70s and early 80s.

Matt Hamill: He is a mixed martial artist and Olympic wrestler. He is also a 3 time NCAA Division III National Champion in wrestling. 

Ludwig van Beethoven: He was a German composer and pianist. He is known as one of the greatest composers of all time.

Andrew Foster: He was the first African American to graduate from Gallaudet University. He also helped lead Deaf Education over in Africa

Juliette Gordan Low: She was the founder of Girl Scouts.

Lauren Ridloff: She is an actress who portrayed the first deaf superhero in the Marvel Cinematic.

William “Dummy” Hoy: He was the first Deaf Major League Baseball player. He played for the Cincinnati Reds and two D.C. franchises.
